Can there be a more perfect, well-rounded album by anyone alive? This I asked myself after having first listened to Sarah's Surfacing... And now, almost 2 years later, I still haven't found an answer. Sarahs voice, the melodies, the lyrics... it all borders on the sublime. Building a Mystery is a wonderful, powerful song to begin with. And next I Love You, which has got to be one of the best songs she ever came up with... so haunting and moving that I have seen it bring tears to many eyes. Angel is another gem in that same category: in fact, only one of these three songs would have in itself justified buying the entire album. But it goes on... what about Adia? What about Sweet Surrender? Surfacing is so much better, so much more mature than her previous Fumbling Toward Ecstasy. Here, she has left out all the unnecessary embellishments, and has found the confidence to let her music and her voice speak for themselves. Only the truly great can allow themselves to be so uncompromising. But Sarah pulls it off so easily. She does not merely surface, but leaps out with the biggest splash imagineable!
