Christina Aguilera
Like fellow former Mickey Mouse clubber Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera kicks off her debut album with a teen-lust nugget--in this case, the No. 1 single "Genie in a Bottle"--that the rest of the disc can't possibly live up to.
Aguilera has a strong voice, but patterns herself after iffy role models such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Aside from "Genie," most of this music is straight from the cookie cutter, like the less than successfully sultry "When You Put Your Hands on Me" and the Mulan ballad showpiece "Reflection." In chart terms, though, there'll be no stopping her--at least for a while.

Christina Aguilera is a gifted singer plagued by mediocre material and an overproduced CD. The songs on her CD manage to stay afloat mainly due to her vocal quality, impressive for someone so young. Like most new pop singers, Aguilera proceeds to bow before the altar of Dianne Warren, the writer behind Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" and LeAnn Rimes "How Do I Live". On "Turn To You", a ballad penned by Warren, Aguilera turns a rather ordinary-if not cliche-song into a vocal powerhouse. "What A Girl Wants" is a slightly jazzy, groovy number with Aguilera's soulful voice at full strength. Her big hit, "Genie In A Bottle" is rather a rather interesting song. Aguilera claims that the song speaks of self-respect but the words imply otherwise. In actuality, it is nothing more than fluff, as is most of Aguilera's record. I don't blame Christina. She is merely a pretty girl with a great voice caught in the middle of an industry hell-bent on selling records rather than making music. If she can find a niche for herself away from that of typical teenage stars, away from the paint-by-numbers formula so prevalent in today's music, she will definately be a name that lasts. She's definitely got the voice. All she needs is the material.

Christina's Voice Shines...
Christina Aguilera probably has the most vocal talent amongst the current crop of teen acts. Her voice is strong and she has a great range. Christina also displays amazing vocal control that allows her to belt and roar out soulful interpretations; pure vocal gymnastics. Although Christina's CD has a few catchy tunes (e.g., Genie In A Bottle and What A Girl Wants), she really deserves more commercially appealing songs. Christina's voice shines probably brightest on ballads that showcases her vocal quality and range. But even her ballads are mostly not very memorable.
I hope her next CD will have more songs that does Christina's talents some justice. Christina Aguilera has a long career ahead of her, and she most resembles Deborah (Debbie) Gibson from the 80s and 90s. Deborah Gibson was never known for being overtly sexual or being a great dancer. This Fall (nearly 13 years since Deborah's debut release), Deborah Gibson will be releasing her 7th album and a new single titled WHAT YOU WANT (which is already being played on radio stations and poised to be a summer/fall hit as touted by the Industry Bible BILLBOARD magazine). Christina Aguilera, with her amazing vocal talent, will no doubt continue in this very fickle business if given good songs.
