 Pete Yorn: "musicforthemorningafter"
Sony Records
New Jersey's Pete Yorn taught himself both the drums and guitar by the age of 12, starting down a path that would eventually lead to musicforthemorningafter, a debut release that reeks of poetic pop and delicate rock.

Yorn's first breakthrough towards a major label debut occurred back in 1990, when a bandmate convinced him to perform the Replacements' "Talent Show" at a high school talent show, his first public attempt at vocals. The response was positive enough to inspire Yorn to move to Los Angeles, where a demo landed two of his songs in the Farrelly brother's Me, Myself and Irene motion picture, starring Jim Carrey. In addition to the tracks, the Farrelly's also invited Yorn to compose the film's score, which he gladly did.

This exposure lead to a Columbia Records deal, and the release of musicforthemorningafter,

which is about as pure a pop record as possible, without the flash and pre-fabricated dance moves that has been associated with pop of late. The opening "Life on a Chain" is seductively addictive; a perfect entry to 13 additional tracks that cover a melange of emotions. Yorn's inspirations are numerous, his sound diverse; pieces of artists such as Paul Westerberg, The Smiths, and even James Taylor can be found throughout the carefully constructed album.

Perhaps Yorn's biggest strength can be found both in his approach and his relative newness. Most of these tracks evolved around a beat - a testament to his roots and regard for the drums - which results in a sound that is both fresh, and remarkably emotive. musicforthemorningafter is a departure from the norm, and a quick lesson in the gifts that the singer-songwriter has to offer.
