 The Wiseguys: "Antidote"
"I feel good! I knew that I would, now". It's been far too many years from the time that these immortal James Brown lyrics first threw themselves across the sweaty midsts of dance halls everywhere. Modern funk? naaaa... Modern soul? naaaa... Modern vibes? increasingly difficult to come across (at least those worth mentioning. What's a society to do without a single rallying cry for the "he-yaaaaaas!" of yesterday? What's a world to do without a single true funk-souled brother to help us shake our tushes and walk the walk. Alas, relief is in sight from the most unusual of sources: a skinny-assed 27 year-old white British white guy strangely (and yet appropriately) named "The Wiseguys".

and gives any other fellow rookies a quick lesson in with it in the process.

The music (oh that music) is as diverse and as refreshing as anything released this year, comfortable in the clubs and souped-up convertibles everywhere. "Cowboy '78" sounds like an ill (literally) mix of East-Indian childbirth, Vatican church bells and a nastier "Who Let The Dogs Out?". Despite the variety, it works, and this recipe duplicates itself time and time again through the recording. Wanna get back to the yester-year of New Jack rap? Check out "The Grabbing Hands". Wanna groove in your James Brown wig and bell-bottoms? Slide in "The Bounce". Hell, even if you want to remain in the day and avoid the time-travels this album offers, "Ooh La La" will keep you one dance step ahead of the posers.

The Wiseguys have, or has hit the scene and memories he will make. This is one of the better albums of the summer and the stuff for which others to cover. Recommended at all costs.
