 The Start: "Shakedown"
Who said New Age was dead? The Start recently released their debut album, Shakedown! and proved that the genre is in fact alive and well.

The Start is a newly formed band, a meshing of artists from various bands. Headlining the group are Aimee Echo (vocals) and Scott Ellis (drums) formerly of the popular band Human Waste Project. Following the lead of Garbage and No Doubt, The Start utilizes a female as its lead singer, and Echo lives up to the task.

While the group's general sound is much like fellow female-driven groups, The Start is clearly on a different playing field than the occasionally schizophrenic Garbage or the wistful and poppy No Doubt. The Start is a throwback to 80's with their blend of punk, rock, and New Wave.

While toiling in relative obscurity, the group has recently toured with commercially viable bands Uncle Kracker, and the reigning champion of sell outs, Sugar Ray. Also, the video for their single "Gorgeous" is milling about in the top 10 on Much Music USA.

Despite being The Start's first foray into cutting an album, Shakedown! is remarkably polished. The group gels well together, producing a fun sound both easy to dance to hard to bash. The Start managed to create a solid premiere album and come off with a distinctive sound that should help to create a fan base, not an easy task to accomplish.

With hard-hitting tracks like "Gorgeous" and "Shakedown," shrouded by an electric atmosphere created by their melodies, and fueled by powerful lead singer Aimee Echo, The Start will surely addict many fans.
