If you're weird, and absolutely must file all of
your cds according to what genre you think they
belong in I suppose this would be comfy in the
"jazz" section, but with a few listens you may
find that this debut outlives any of the
'isms' placed on it by the
likes of Kenny G, or John Tesh, or anybody else
who leaps to mind when the phrase modern
jazz comes up over coffee. Calling to
mind a more minimal Chick Corea, with less
grandstanding (songs built around drum solos),
and more attention given to the melodies of the
tunes themselves, Brown's piano would make Madlib
(Lootpack, Quasimoto), or Pete Rock go "wha?".

This was produced by Angela Piva, a busy girl,
fresh off of her work on the excellent new Raw
Text album, with an ear ready to tackle nearly
anything without giving it that same, homogenized
sound. I have an idea for you The Listener: sell
all of your jazz stuff (saving anything by
Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Yesterdays New
Quintet, or Miles Davis), get this album, and
your collection will pass muster next time I pop
by for a visit.
