Brian Setzer: "'68 Comeback Special Ignition" |
 |
Rev up that engine, turn on Ignition, put on your seatbelt and find a good stretch of highway
the new release from former Stray Cats member, Brian Setzer will take you for a ride!
Setzer began his career in the early 80's with The Stray Cats - a group looking to revive rockabilly - and a task which was ultimately successful. Among their hits were the classic "Stray Cat Strut" and "Rumble in Brighton." Their songs were the type which made your feet instinctively want to get up and dance whether or not your mind was ready.
In the early 90's, Setzer formed The Brian Setzer Orchestra (BSO), a project which saw a 16-piece horn-based band backing the rock and roll guitar player. This again went against the norm as it had a big band sound, yet relied strongly on rock and roll. The band reached success far beyond what they anticipated.
2001 has hit and Brian Setzer is back at it. His newest endeavour is a 3-piece group with Mark Winchester on bass and Bernie Dresel on drums, both of whom were formerly part of BSO. The result: Ignition, a high energy, extremely fast album.

This new release shows the diverse talents of Setzer. The first song and title track, "Ignition" demands attention right from the get-go, as do the next two tunes, "5Years, 4Months, 3 Days" and "Hell Bent". This trio of tunes is fast and fun, pedal-to-the-metal types that push the limits, and reflect the speed of the album as a whole.
"Hot Rod Girl" and "Rooster Rock" are the most reminiscent of The Stray Cats, blending classic rockabilly with pulsating beats. "8-track" will amuse with its rockin' country flavour complete with yodelling (included compliments of Setzer); "Santa Rosa Rita" and "Malaguena" have a Mexican flavour. The mellowest song on the album is "Dreamsville", a song that floats along as purely as the name implies. This is strategically situated second last on the album, which calms you down as you near your final destination.
In this album the backing music is just as important as the vocals. Setzer has a good voice, but it is the voice-music combination that makes this album. Overall, the song order was thought out: Setzer gets your adrenalin going and then successfully calms the listener down. This is the album for summer road trips and BBQs
