Live At The Cambridge Folk Festival

Stephane Grappelli Stephane Grappelli is not a household name, but his music has been around since 1927. He played piano and violin for silent pictures and by the 1930's he had added dance bands to his repertoire.

He was a man before his time, as it would be 25 years before free jazz would be recognized as a stylistic movement. He was part of a quintet that enjoyed popularity in France, sometimes performing with Josephine Baker, George Gershwin and Louis Armstrong.

Grappelli's career plateaued in the 1950s, but in 1969 at the Newport Jazz Festive he made his American debut. This, combined with a comeback performance in 1973 at the renown Cambridge Folk Festival in England, propelled him to international fame. Grappelli's easy, innovative stylings evoke memories of a more relaxed time when the terms 'fast tracking' and 'upwardly mobile' hadn't even been imagined.

The cover of this CD belies the music you'll hear. You see a man with a fiddle and a checked shirt playing

Live at the Cambridge Folk Festival and you think you know what you'll hear, but what a surprise! Instead of the usual folk or country fiddle music, your ears are treated to some wonderful renditions of easy listening music that makes you think of dancing cheek to cheek in a ballroom. This CD gives the sense of listening to an orchestra. The tracks flow easily and the live component of the audience reinforces the upbeat feeling. All of the tracks from "Cheek to Cheek" to "I Can't Give You Anything But Love Baby" have been around for years, but they seem fresh and new with the soft, easy flowing melodies. Definitely a good listening CD. Just right for a little romantic background music or a walk down memory lane.
