At first I kind of wrote this off as the Black Crowes vs. the Meat Puppets,
but this three piece is a lot more creative than I reckoned on the first
listen. If I Were 5 People definitely does hearken back to the second Meat
Puppets album. Good lyrical stabs at schlock & roll on this thing:
"…dressed up in a rock music costume. But without words making hook nothing
interesting." Broken English and unbroken Japanese collide collectively on
the vocals. I haven’t heard or seen anything on Dainashi since I pulled it
outta the Used bin at the shop up the street. If you’re into soulful rock
with bits of 70’s acid wah-wah pedals, funny lyrics, and guitar solos that’d
make Steve Miller peel off that Joker mask and go "Whaaa...?" then I can
easily recommend this. I mean, I bought it, and I only really listen to
hoaky 70’s stuff like Miller

or Styx to reminisce about elementary school
when my vinyl copy of The Joker was almost worn right through from me
playing it so much. Lots of pictures in the cd booklet too: shots of them
carrying on like freaks on tops of vans and tractors, rolling in the dirt,
etc. No mope rock here. They actually seem to enjoy being in a band. I just
heard a cool violin solo. This is starting to grow on me.
