Counting Crows Biography

Counting Crows I was down at the New Amsterdam staring at this / yellow haired girl / Mr. Jones strikes up a conversation with this black haired falmenco dancer… These immortal words created the careers of five young men from America. Almost everybody who listens to music know of the Counting Crows and certainly all recognize the opening verse of the band’s biggest hit to date, “Mr. Jones."

The Counting Crows initially formed as a partnership between dread-locked singer Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson. An instant coffeehouse hit, the band decided upon the name Counting Crows after an English divination rhyme.

After the five-man core of the band fully came together in 1991, the band successfully snagged a record deal in 1992, signing with DGC Records. It is a testament to the band’s talent that they opened for the immortal Bob Dylan before they recorded their first album, August and Everything After . When the album did come to the public, along with “Mr. Jones", music fans and the music world couldn’t get enough. Called “one of the best rock releases of the year" by Rolling Stone magazine, August and Everything After hit number four on the Billboard 200, and remained on the charts for an unbelievable 93 weeks.

Counting Crows @ CanEHdian

Although their next release, 1996’s Recovering the Satellites debuted at #1, and was eventually certified double platinum, the album didn’t appeal to fans on the wide scale as their debut release. Admittedly, August and Everything After was an impossible act to follow, and the band only reacted in stride: by continuing to tour and to record great music.

Two albums later the Counting Crows stand in a strong position in terms of stability in the music world. Continued critical acclaim and a loyal fan base ensure the band’s position in the early new century.
