Garth Brooks Profile

Garth Brooks Performing in nightclubs was the break that Garth Brooks needed both personally and professionally. Born and raised in Oklahoma, Troyal Garth Brooks is the son of former country singer, Colleen Carroll, who recorded for Capitol Records. Though he earned a university track and field scholarship and obtained an advertising degree, the 9-5 life did not appeal to Brooks. Heading to Nashville after college, Brooks took on a variety of jobs while looking for his big break. While working at a bar, Brooks met his future wife Sandy after breaking up a fight. The married shortly afterwards however, Brooks could not stop thinking about a former girlfriend and wondering what might have been. He met up with this former girlfriend a few years later and discovered that they both had changed. Penning the song "Unanswered Prayers" in response to their meeting got Brooks signed with Capitol Records.

His first album Garth Brooks was released in 1989 and worked its way to No.4 on country music charts. It was a huge hit and paved the way for Brooks' second release, No Fences. The 1990 album went platinum in less than a month and sold more than 13 million copies with singles "Friends in Low Places" and "The Thunder Rolls". With his increasing popularity and wide range of appeal, the Brooks' next two albums were released at No.1. 1992's The Chase and 1993's In Pieces were both multi-platinum though not as critically acclaimed as earlier releases.

The Hits a 1994 limited release of the best of Garth Brooks was followed in 1995 by Fresh Horses.

The latter brought about the hit singles "She's Every Woman" and the Aerosmith cover "The Fever." A world-wide tour followed in 1996 much to the delight of fans. Sevens, appropriately titled for his seventh album was released in 1997 and 1998 saw dismal results to the release of In the Life of Chris Gaines.

Throughout his career, Brooks has received many accolades from the recording industry including: 2 Grammys, 16 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, 5 World Music Awards, 10 People's Choice Awards and 24 Billboard Music Awards. The list also includes Artist of the Decade at the American Music Awards in 2000 and the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1999.

In the fall of 2000, Brooks announced his retirement from the country music scene saying that he needed to spend more time with his family though a couple of weeks later he filed for divorce from his wife of 14 years. According to reports, Brooks has a summer of 2001 release in the works. Hopefully, with this release will come a revived Brooks, the one we used to know.
