Ace of Base are Ulf Ekberg (songwriter/keyboards) and family members Jonas (keyboards), Jenny and Malin (vocals) Berggren. Forming in 1990 and initially playing small local clubs, their hit “Wheel of Fortune” first gained them recognition throughout Scandinavia.

There are many reasons for the Swedish band Ace of Base’s rise to worldwide popularity, one of which may have been a simple name change. Originally using the insignificant moniker “Tech Noir”, the change came just before the band hit the big time.

Their debut album The Sign made Ace of Base instant stars and radio familiar around the world. The same titled single was the second to climb the charts, proceeded by “All that She Wants” (which peaked at No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100). “The Sign” snagged the No.1 spot and sold over 1 million copies on its own strength. Ace of Bace and The Sign reached the Top 10 an impressive third time with the danceable “Don’t Turn Around.

All told The Sign sold over 9 million albums and earned Ace of Base a rash of music award nominations (at Grammys, American Music Awards and Billboard Music Awards).

Sweden hadn’t produced as successful a band since ABBA, two decades earlier.

Ace of Base followed with 1995’s The Bridge which again garnered the band a platinum album. The album strengthened the band’s club appeal with the popular “It’s a Beautiful Life gaining mahor airtime on radio stations and dance floors worldwide.

The band’s last release, 1998’s Cruel Summer has not achieved the same level of record sales as their previous two releases, but nonetheless Ace of Base’s popularity has remained strong. Scores of fan dedications have emerged online along with calls for a 4th release.
