 Static In Stereo
Universal Records
Meet Static in Stereo. The group released their self-titled first album with limitless aspirations. Weaned on The Beatles, The Who, Bob Dylan, and the like, Static had set high standards for themselves from the beginning.

Static in Stereo features brothers Todd (guitar) and John Kerns (bass), carved out of the now extinct The Age of Electric. The two then brought along their younger brother Ryan (lead guitar) to complete the front formation of the group. Still lacking a percussionist, they turned to Scott McCargar, who was once an avid follower of The Age of Electric.

With legs to stand on, the band then decided to find a sound. Drawing on past influences, the group concocted a furious blend of rock and punk. Lamenting the recent demise of rock and roll, and the rise of hip hop and hardcore, Static in Stereo wanted to retain their roots while still staying contemporary.

Influences such as The Who, Sex Pistols, KISS, and David Bowie can be heard throughout Static's songs. Perhaps most omnipresent throughout their first studio effort is the sound of AC/DC. As did their Australian predecessors, Static in Stereo finishes most of their songs with rollicking guitar solos and crescendos. One can almost see Malcolm and Angus Young on stage with the band.

With rock once again plowing its way to the top behind groups such as Dave Matthews Band, Weezer, and Staind, Static in Stereo seems poised to be swept up in the ensuing tidal wave. Their self-titled album might not be "the record to save rock n' roll," as Todd Kerns dubbed it, but it is a solid effort and enjoyable distraction from the recent vapid landscape of American Rock, albeit made by Canadians.
