The Stampeders: "Against The Grain" |
 |
One of the biggest Canadian bands of the 1970's was the Stampeders. In an
aggressive reissue campaign, Unidisc Music Inc. is reissuing the entire
Stampeders catalogue on CD format.
Originally released in 1971, "Against The Grain" was the debut album by
Calgary's Stampeders. The roots of the Stampeders can be traced back to
1963 in Calgary, Alberta, and a band called The Rebounds which was the
original pairing of Rich Dobson and Kim Berly along with two other band
members. In 1964 the Rebounds became The Stampeders and by 1965 more line
up changes resulted in which Ronnie King joined the band and also around
this time Mel Shaw became the bands manager As a six piece The Stampeders
recorded a number of singles for various labels that while unsuccessful
commercially, brought the band to the attention internationally. In 1968
The Stampeders became a three piece unit and set forth to develop their own
style and sound.
In 1970 the band commenced work on an album which resulted
in the song "Carry Me", the first single from this session. The song was
released and quickly hit the top of the Canadian charts, garnering the band
it's first gold record. The resulting LP, "Against The Grain," was released
in 1971 and the next single, "Sweet City Woman"

also became a hit charting
to the Number One position across Canada.
The success of Sweet City Woman
attracted the attention of the American label, Bell Records and the
Stampeders were signed immediately and Bell rush released the single in the
U.S where it also became a hit. Bell records even renamed the album "Sweet
City Woman" for the U.S. market to capitalize on the success of the single.
The album contained a dozen original songs written by Dodson, Berly and
King in the style of the band was unique but it has been compared to such
American bands as CCR, Poco or even the Byrds at times but with a Canadian
twist to the lyrics. The album garnered Juno Awards for 'Best Vocal
Instrumental Group,' 'Best Producer,' 'Best Single' and 'Best Composer' and
was released in England and Europe.
This reissue of "Against The Grain' by
Unidisc Music Inc features the original album graphics and contains two
bonus tracks not found on the original album including a french version of
"Sweet City Woman" entitled, "Oui Tu Es Mon Ami"! The sound on this release
is superb and the album sounds as fresh today as it did 30 years ago when
it was first released.
