David Gogo - "Halfway to Memphis"

David Gogo was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia and starting making music with a ukulele when he was four years old, and with a guitar when he was five. By the time he was in high school he had started down the long road to success. The rest, as they say, is history.

David Gogo's musical tastes didn't mirror that of his peers in the early 1980's - his interest was in blues music. One of the highlights and pivotal moments of his career was meeting Stevie Ray Vaughan, who encouraged him to follow his dream.

Gogo had some success with his band in Western Canada and touring Europe with the 'Fabulous Thunderbirds', when he signed a solo recording contract. It was difficult to leave the band, but it was time. He went on to share the stage with such greats as B.B. King, Otis Rush, Blues Traveler at the Montreaux Festival in Switzerland, and to guest on Tom Cochrane's Mad Mad World album.

While touring and performing he also managed to fit in time to write material for his first and self-titled, JUNO-nominated album - David Gogo. His success took a bit of a detour when changes at the recording company forced him to make some difficult choices.

His decision to leave the recording company and stay true to his music proved to be a good one and he released his second album Dine Under the Stars to international acclaim. His next album Change of Pace leaned a little more in the rock genre direction, and got him FM airplay. Bare Bones, an acoustic album, got him a "Musician of the Year" award at the 1999/2000 West Coast Music Awards.

Halfway to Memphis is 11 tacks of strong, played-from-the-soul blues. Gogo makes excellent use of a variety of guitars to achieve his distinct sound - a '72 Gibson SG, a '59 355, a lap steel, and a Maple Neck Strat with some interesting amps. He gives each track special treatment and adds in some very talented musicians to make this a very distinctive album.

Halfway to Memphis is David Gogo's latest release and has been well received in Europe - success that should follow him to Canada. This is "The Blues" and unites traditional blues with David Gogo's innovative style. The title may be Halfway to Memphis, but this album is an 'all the way' success.
