Celine Dion is really two superb singers rolled into one. I never cease to be amazed at just how different her voice sounds depending on whatever language she sings in. While her English music veers more and more towards the baroque, her French work is so delightfully simple and crisp. J-J Goldmans compositions are almost primitive in compariso to Dions sleek American work, but I for one much prefer this laid-backness, because it makes Dions voice stand out so much better. Without mannerisms, Dions voice truly comes alive.
The first song of her French album -originally called D'eux- "Pour que tu m'aimes encore: (So that you'll love me once more) is one of her best, a wonderful midtempo tune that absolutely compels you to grab that lyric book and start singing along in French (while no one is around, of course).
Two ballads stand out even more: J'attendais (I waited) and Vole, Vole (Fly, Fly). Anyone who thought she sang well on My heart will go on will be gobsmacked when they hear these gems.
In France, her latest French album is even better, so that's one to keep an eye out for. But in the meantime, sample the formidable miss Dion on this French Album... simplement delicieux!
