Loudon Wainwright Biography
|
It ain’t easy being Loudon Wainwright. And we have twenty-one songs to prove it. For the past three decades, Mr. Wainwright has been recording countless radio sessions, recording the many songs he has written, some only having been composed a day prior to recording! The BBC Sessions is a compilation put together by the singer/songwriter himself, featuring carefully selected songs which, in some cases, date back to the early seventies. His songs are little slices of life, relating to day-to-day topics such as Sundays, school, and being down in the dumps. His music, which doesn’t consist of much more than an acoustic guitar and Loudon’s laid back, ever so slightly nasal voice (think: Neil Young but not as extreme), is a bit bluesy, a bit funny, and not hard to kick back and listen to. Some tunes also include subtle piano playing, such as the ballad “Prince Hal’s Dirge".
The lyrics on The BBC Sessions well reflect Wainwright’s experiences in life, and can easily be related to. The song “No", among others, shows his strong ability as a songwriter, ranking up among hailed lyricists like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell.

Loudon Wainwright III @ CanEHdian:

But don’t expect to see Loudon Wainwright’s songs on Top 40 countdowns- There’s nothing flashy or commercial about these recordings, just raw feelings and stories that visit all aspects of life.
Loudon Wainwright’s BBC Sessions are a rich find, and the album will appeal to baby boomers who’ve nearly worn out their old Harvest record, and maybe even younger crowds as well. And where does he get all this material? It’s simple- this guy has paid his dues (and some!) For anyone who enjoys music that’s simple and true, this album is worth a listen..
