A three-song prelude to their long-awaited upcoming record. Theory of Ruin
features Alex Newport on vocals and guitars (formerly of Fudge Tunnel and
Nailbomb). What you get on this ep, is not just the intense heaviness of
Fudge Tunnel, since that band did a somewhat close (yet, obviously very
de-tuned) version of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love". You also get a thick,
full, extremely dark sound, that Steve Albini only wishes he could come up
with. Leave it to Alex, who recorded it himself, and is now making quite a
name for himself (having worked with The Melvins, and many others recently)
in capturing all the best elements of the band. With Theory of Ruin you get
a tunefulness that sets them well apart from like-minded bands, like Unsane,
and approaches suffocation; not unlike Swans playing punk. Recommended.
