Normally I don’t really pay a lot of attention to ‘guitar music’. I’ve found
it to usually be fairly pretentious and masturbatory. However, here I am
reviewing a burgeoning Guitar God, and his debut. Denis is good. Scary good.
He’s different from more his more well-known predecessors, like Joe Satriani
or Steve Vai. While ‘Satch’ is famous for his flying mullet, and
rush-to-the-whammy-bar noodling, Vai is just overtly heavy metal, out of
touch, and thus excruciating. Fodder for guys, who at age thirty, still work
at music stores, and think long-hair is rad. Denis Taafe is more melodic and
actually sings on “You Don’t Have To Pretend", the stand-out track on this
cd. “Abducted by Aliens" is apparently only the genesis of where his playing
is going. With vocals adding a more human slant to his songs, I’d say his
future looks bright.
